Ministry of Defence loses extraordinary amount of tech

Clumsy officials at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) are reported to lose around 15 laptops a month, reports The Inquirer.

Approximately 188 MoD laptops, 99 desktops, 72 hard disks and 73 USB memory sticks have gone missing in the last year and a half, with officials either losing the tech or becoming the victims of theft.

Despite the MoD being a large organisation, the level of loss is astounding, especially considering the level of sensitive information the department deals with. Amazingly, 21 of the laptops went missing during a single incident in Germany.

Luckily this level of technology should have adequate IT technical support software that can thwart any hackers or miscreants from accessing the informations.

According to the Mail Online, a further "18 mobile phones, 10 BlackBerry's and 194 CD's or DVDs" also went missing, as well as 150 back-up tapes used to store information.

The Ministry of Defence has responded to the article: "Twenty of these laptops have subsequently been recovered. The size and complexity of the MoD, more than 250,000 individuals operating all round the world from permanent bases and in theatre, and frequent movement of kit between locations in support of operations mean it is almost inevitable that equipment will go missing."
