Companies struggling with IT updates

Many companies are struggling to keep up with the many updates made to their systems, resulting in being left unprotected against potential cyber attacks.

According to research published by computing.co.uk (on behalf of Tufin Technologies), two-thirds of businesses are leaving themselves open to security breaches.

This is because it is taking them too long to change their IT system's rules after updates are applied, or perhaps the updates are being implemented incorrectly in the first place. In fact, a whopping 66 per cent of those involved in the research admitted that their processes leave them vulnerable.

"We were surprised to learn that half the sample is still doing basic tasks manually, such as tightening up permissive rules, looking for shadowed rules, or re-certifying rules," added Shaul Efraim, a representative for the research. Doing this could not only encourage security breaches, but also waste the experience of any computer support specialists hired by the company, he implied.

However, not everyone shared his thinking. Andrew Kellett, an industry specialist, explained that there are advantages to both automated and manual processes. "It depends on which parts of the infrastructure you're looking at and what the business' priorities are," he revealed.

Perhaps most worryingly, 20 per cent of those who took part in the research said they knew those undertaking firewall audits for their companies had cheated at one point or another. Furthermore, a scary 23 per cent said they'd never even undertaken such an audit, Informationweek.com confirmed.
